RENO -A little rust came with Carson High School in its first softball game in more than a week, but the Senators turned it on when they needed to and defeated Hug 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
Hug scored three runs in the bottom of the second off Melissa Stone to take a 3-1 lead, but the Senators tied it up in their next at bat, then added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to score a Northern 4A Conference win.
Nicole Freeman also shut the Hawks' offense down from the third inning on to pick up the win for Carson (27-7, 15-7 Northern 4A).
"We showed a little rust, but we came back strong," Carson coach John Sullivan said. "We hit the ball much better in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings."
Chrissy Joseph led a 13-hit Carson attack, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Amanda Hoff was 3-for-4 with a double. Jina Padilla and Nicole Freeman both picked up two hits and an RBI for the Senators.
The Senators are fighting for the fourth spot in the conference playoff race, and it could come down to a season-ending doubleheader with Reno at 10 a.m. Saturday. Before that game, Carson travels to Sparks for a 3:30 p.m. game on Thursday.
