Class size reduction report to be made

Carson City's primary classes - kindergarten through third - are with in state requirements.

Dorothy Todd, associate superintendent for educational services, said that the district's annual report shows a decrease in some class sizes.

"If we have over the number of students in the first- or second-grades, we're supposed to have a variance," she said.

The state has set a ratio of teacher to pupil at 15-to-1 in first- and second-grade, and 19-1 in third-grade.

Carson City's statistics in kindergarten "were up a part of a student." The ratio for Carson kindergartners was 24.6 students to 1 teacher in 1998 and this year is 25.1 to 1.

In the first-grade, it was 15.3 to 1, and this year is 16 to 1. In second-grade it was 16.6 to 1 and this year is 15.2 to 1. In third-grade it was 19.9 to 1 this year 19.7 to 1.

"We were close.," Todd said. "We just have to figure it out to be in compliance with the state."

The presentation will be made to trustees at its meeting which begins at 7 p.m. today in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.
