Dillie pitches perfect game

Jennifer Dillie had already been unhittable while pitching for Dayton High School twice this season, tossing no-hitters against Lovelock and North Tahoe.

But on Thursday, Dillie was perfect in the Dust Devils' game against Whittell, as she didn't allow a Warrior baserunner during the five-inning, 11-0 Dayton victory.

Dillie struck out 14 of the 15 Whittell batters she faced and she didn't surrender a walk. The Dayton defense contributed by not committing an error during the contest.

"We had expected to use other pitchers during the game, but Jen was pitching so well, we had to let her finish," said Dayton coach Jeanne Utterback.

Dillie was also one of Dayton's top hitters, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.

Other Dayton players recording RBIs were Rachel Hurt (3), Maggie Fluharty (1), Cayla Reese (1), Carrie Kordonowy (1) and Trista Julian (1).

The win gives the Dust Devils a 3-0 division record and sets up a division home doubleheader showdown on Saturday (1 p.m.) with Yerington, which is also undefeated.

Northern 4A Softball

Galena 5, Reed 2

Jenn Molinari went the distance, overcoming nine Raider hits and helping the Grizzlies grab a key win in the race for the zone playoffs.

Galena (10-5 Northern 4A) scored two runs in the bottom of the third, then added three more in the fourth to outlast Reed, one of the stronger teams in the conference.

In the third, Monica Dietz led off with a walk, then advanced to second on Brooke Holland's base hit. After both runners moved up on a ground out, Kirsten Drury singled to score Dietz.

Teresa Miller then stepped up and delivered a single that scored Holland and Drury.

"We hit the ball very well," Galena coach Teresa Burrows said. "They hit it, but we hit right back. We played much better defense this time too."

Molinari (6-3) struck out four and walked only one in her complete-game performance. Miller was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to pace the Grizzly hit attack.

Galena travels to face Wooster at 3:30 p.m. today, then plays a doubleheader at Hug at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Northern 4A Baseball

Reno 8, Galena 5

Billy Paganetti recorded his 10th homer of the season for the Grizzlies, but it wasn't enough as Reno raised its record to 15-1. The loss dropped Galena to 12-2.

Galena fell behind 5-1 when it committed three errors, which resulted in two unearned runs for the Huskies.

Galena climbed back into the game in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by D.J. Stacey, which cut the Reno lead to 5-4.

Reno put the game away in the bottom of sixth, however, when John Fahrendorf hit a three-run homer.

An estimated 15 baseball scouts were at the game to watch Reno prospect Marc Kaiser.
