WASHINGTON - The Justice Department has awarded $111,130 to Nevada to help enforce domestic violence laws in rural communities.
"Domestic violence touches every community in Nevada regardless of size," said Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.
He said the money will help victims who need safe shelter and give law enforcement agencies help as well in holding abusers accountable for their actions.
"There is no reason why a woman or her child should have to sustain any level of abuse," said Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev. He said the funding will help protect rural families while they recover from domestic violence.
In addition, the senators announced $640,000 in grants to school-based learning centers in Clark County. Those grants will go to community centers in Roy Martin, Sunrise Acres and Desert Pines. The activities will primarily be after school but there will also be weekend and summer programs.
