ELKO-The day started out horribly for the Douglas High School boys basketball team but ended fantastically, as Darin Arigoni's shot at the buzzer went in to give the Tigers a 50-49 win over Elko on the road.

The long trip to eastern Nevada had started slowly for the Tigers when the team's charter bus broke down in the Douglas parking lot just as the team was preparing to depart. But the day became much better for the Tigers when the team made up a three-point deficit in the game's final 30 seconds to earn the victory in perhaps the toughest atmosphere for a visiting team in Northern Nevada. After a Douglas basket cut the Elko lead to 49-48, the Tigers stole the ball and set up a shot for Seth Lee with 12 seconds remaining. Lee missed his shot, but Douglas got the offensive rebound and Arigoni got off a short-range shot as time expired. The ball dropped through the hoop to give the Tigers yet another upset victory and raise the team's record to 4-2.

Douglas coach Keith Lewis said it's been the Tigers defense which has allowed them to do so well in the early season.

"Our defensive totals are keeping us in ballgames," Lewis said. "As thrilled as I am about Arigoni hitting the shot, I'm more thrilled the team was able to get defensive stops when we needed it."

Lee was the Tigers' high scorer with 14 points.

Elko's Sean Paul, a 6-foot-9 center, was the game's high scorer with 27 points.

Lewis said the Tigers are steadily growing more confident with each contest.

"There is cautious optimism on the team, but we know we can improve," Lewis said.

Douglas hosts Manogue at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
