Fallon outscores Carson

FALLON - Even 13 runs wasn't enough for the Carson High School baseball on Tuesday. The Fallon Greenwave scored nine runs in the third inning en route to a 20-13 win against Carson in a slugfest between Northern 4A baseball playoff contenders.

"Normally, 13 runs and 13 hits should be enough to win a ballgame," Carson coach Ron McNutt said after watching his club fall to 9-5 in conference. "But when you look up at the scoreboard and see where the other team has 20 runs and 15 hits, and you've given up nine walks, then you're not going to win any ball games."

Fallon scored in five of its six innings against a total of seven Carson pitchers.

"I think both teams struggled with pitching," McNutt said. "It was one of those days where the wind was really, really bad and nobody could get the ball over the plate."

This game was offensive from the start.

Fallon's Matt Chicvara hit a three-run homer to give Fallon a 3-2 lead in the first inning. Carson came back to score seven times in the second, highlighted by a Matt Leck home run, to take a 9-3 lead.

Nick Gitthens homered to lead off the fourth inning as the Senators scored three times to pull within 13-12, but the Greenwave answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and then four more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Gitthens hit 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Leck went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for the Senators.

Carson, now midway through a stretch of nine straight road games, travels to Winnemucca on Thursday to play Lowry. The Senators visit Reed for a doubleheader on Saturday.
