A fire, believed to be caused by a spark from a welder, burned three acres in Washoe Valley on Monday afternoon.

The fire scorched grassland near South Jumbo Grade on the east side of the valley. Two houses were threatened by the flames, but were successfully protected by fire crews.

Forty-five firefighters started arriving at the scene shortly after 12:52 p.m. when the fire was reported. The fire was quickly brought under control. Eight engines, two hand crews and a helicopter were involved in dousing the flames.

Bulldozers pushed earth to prevent the fire from reigniting. A mild breeze replaced the high winds that ordinarily blow through the region.

As of 6 p.m., the fire was contained and crews were mopping up, according to a spokeswoman for Minden Interagency Dispatch.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, broadcast reports indicated that the fire was caused by a welding torch.

The report came from 4320 Jumbo Grade in New Washoe City.
