Gardnerville product Luke Anderson was among the players taken during the first part of Major League Baseball's First Year Player draft on Monday.
Anderson (6-foot-5, 225 pounds), who just finished his third season at UNLV, was picked in the 18th round by the San Francisco Giants with the 541st overall pick. He attended Douglas High School through his sophomore season before transferring to Green Valley High in Henderson in 1996.
At UNLV last season, Anderson had a 3-4 record in 57.1 innings, recording 60 strikeouts and 19 walks. He was the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Jan. 31.
Anderson was 4-7 in 60 games at UNLV. He was originally drafted as a high school senior back in 1996, taken in the 27th round by the
Colorado Rockies after helping Green Valley to a state title.
Two former Galena players were also selected, Chris Key, out of San Jose State, and Vincente Bonilla of Tulane.
Key, a 6-3 lefty, won 13 games and helped San Jose State to Friday's College World Series, was taken in the 18th round by Florida. Bonilla was drafted in the eighth round by Minnesota.
