Genoa business group raising funds for Thompson statue

Member of the Greater Genoa Business Association have undertaken a project to erect a statue to honor Norwegian-American John "Snowshoe" Thompson in the center of Genoa in the Mormon Station State Park.

A brick wall will surround a life-size bronze sculpture of "Snowshoe," created by Colorado sculptor Don Budy. Residents can become a part of the history of Genoa by having their name or the names of loved ones, grandchildren, groups or organizations engraved on a brick for a tax-deductible minimum donation of $100 per brick.

"Snowshoe" Thompson delivered mail and other goods, including medicines, over a treacherous 90-mile route through the Sierra from Genoa to Placerville twice a month every winter from 1856 to 1876. His treks were made on what was probably the first pair of wooden skis in the West. He was never fully compensated by the postal service for his efforts and dangerous ventures. "Snowshoe" is buried in the Genoa Cemetery.

The sculpture project is being financed entirely by donations and the goal is $50,000.
