Great Basin College enrollment increases

ELKO - Great Basin College overall enrollment has increased 10.6 percent in full-time students - the second highest in the University and Community College System of Nevada.

"I think this is an indication that people are looking to Great Basin College as providing a variety of educational opportunities from personal interest to associate and now baccalaureate degrees," said college Dean of Enrollment Lynn Mahlberg, who attributed a large portion of the increase in the full-time enrollment to the college's first four-year degree in elementary education.

A full-time students is decided on and funded by the community college system.

Officially 47 students have been admitted to the four-year elementary education program. These students are from throughout the college's service area. A number of baccalaureate courses are delivered by interactive video between Battle Mountain, Elko, Ely, Eureka, Wells and Winnemucca.

"We are making a concerted effort to encourage students to seek faculty advice about their program of study," said Mahlberg. "We now publish our schedule earlier so students have the opportunity to seek faculty advisement, enroll earlier, and in turn provide more lead time to open new sections of high demand courses.

Between fall and spring semesters there are more courses offered during the mini-term (Jan. 3-21) for students who only want a two-week holiday break prior to continuing classes in the traditional spring semester.

The college's fall semester ended Friday, Dec. 17, with the spring semester to begin Jan. 24. Those wishing to enroll in courses can register by phone at 753-2100, on the Internet at www.gbenv.edu or at the nearest college branch campus location.
