Carson City is going out on a limb to add more shade along city streets.
Members of the city Shade Tree Council are thinking about using about $10,000 of Quality of Life money to promote tree growing along city rights of way.
The idea is that a property owner may want to have a tree planted in front of his house. He would ask the city Parks Department to check the location to make sure it's the right place for the right tree. The property owner would pay for the tree and the city would pay to have it planted, as well as for periodic health checks for the tree for up to two years.
It's a simple program aimed at increasing the city's urban forest, Parks Superintendent Scott Fahrenbruch said.
"We hoping this will be an attractive enough program to draw people," he said. "If people have an investment in the tree and are in a partnership with the city, we hope they will take better care of the trees."
