Letter: Eagle Valley students deserve equal play

My daughter graduated from Eagle Valley Middle School on June 8. On the front page of the Nevada Appeal Friday edition, June 9 there was an article and two color photos of Carson Middle School graduates. The article continued on the back with another CMS graduation picture.

In the entire article Eagle Valley Middle School was only mentioned twice, while Carson Middle School had the entire article devoted to them. I feel that the graduating students of EVMS were treated unfairly. If the Nevada Appeal is going to cover middle school graduation, it should take the time and manpower to provide adequate coverage in order to attend both middle school graduations. There has always been a competition between the two schools and this just adds fuel to the fire. For those who took the time to attend the 8th grade orientation, earlier this year, the high school principal made it very clear that once the students were in high school it didn't matter which school they came from. He emphasized, "no one is any better than anyone else."

EVMS had 33 students who received the Presidents Award for Educational Excellence. To receive this award, a student must maintain an A average during the 3 years in middle school and also must place in the top 15 percent, nationally, on the Terra Nova Test.

Our band took first place the last two years in the Nevada Day Parade. They have also performed at Disneyland and this year was the only middle school band to reach the high school level in the site reading competition. I feel the students and faculty of Eagle Valley Middle School deserve an apology from the Nevada Appeal. EVMS students have worked just as diligently as CMS and deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments.
