Letter: Roundabouts work if people know how

In response to the lengthy letter in May 28 letters to the editor from Marilyn and Tom Spencer, I think roundabouts are a very good thing if drivers know how to use them. The main thing is courtesy. You have to know how to drive in a roundabout.

My wife and I just returned from Scotland and Ireland where we encountered many roundabouts that make this one on Fifth Street look like a bump in the road. Over there (Scotland), the roundabouts are large and have multiple exits and have two lanes. On top of that, as you know, they have right hand driving and drive on the left hand side of the road. There are never any problems in that country. Why can't we learn from them?

As you enter the roundabout in the USA, you look to the left, and if another car is entering or in the roundabout, you wait for him and then you enter. Also, as you said, use your turn signals so the other drivers know what you are going to do.

I think we can live with the roundabouts. In many areas, they can control traffic better and less expensively than traffic lights.
