I always look forward to Saturday's paper and Rhonda Costa-Landers' articles "Under One Roof." She does a great job of enlightening us on some of the positive things happening here in Carson Country. It unfortunately is often in sharp contrast to other things which make the news.
This past Saturday I was filled with feelings of joy and sorrow as I read "Moving On" about John and Lisa Van Cleef's pending departure to their new assignment in Medford, Ore.
Prior to meeting John and Lisa four years ago the closest I had been to a member of the Salvation Army was curbside at the Rose Parade. From the day they arrived the Van Cleefs sought ways to minister not only to their own congregation but to everyone they came in contact with. That ministry has consisted of reaching out to those in need with food, clothing, housing, and with the offer of the good news of the gospel.
Although I am not a member of their congregation, they gave my wife and I the opportunity to shop with kids at Mervyn's Back to School shopping spree and to ring the bell and man the Red Kettle at Christmas time. You can't ask for a better way to get into the spirit of the season!
John, while president of the Ministerial Fellowship, organized the "Change for Change" campaign to help those suffering in Central America following Hurricane Mitch. John and Lisa may never know all of the lives they have touched, by their good works but more importantly by their example.
It is pretty incredible in this day and age, when it seems the majority are striving for fame and fortune, to meet a couple who have dedicated their lives to the model of being a servant to others. Carson City has truly been blessed by your time with us.
The Salvation Army has made many a friend because of your infectious smile, warm handshake and loving embrace. We will miss you both, but are filled with joy knowing that your lives will continue to be a beacon to those in Southern Oregon.
