Lyon County District Attorney Robert Estes filed Wednesday for the new Third Judicial District judge's seat.
There are already two district judges serving Lyon and Storey counties. The new position was created by the 1997 Legislature, but the counties couldn't provide the funding or courthouse space to fill the position until this year.
Estes, 52, is in his second term as Lyon County district attorney. He has a juris doctorate degree from Pittsburgh State, taught chemistry in Australia and later Las Vegas before becoming a lawyer.
He has lived in Nevada since 1977.
"A judge should be knowledgeable in the law and have skill in its application along with a judicial temperament," he said.
Estes will face Will Mattly, a former Lander County DA and former assistant U.S. attorney. Mattly, of Fallon, filed Monday for the post.
