Murder investigators want to question unknown man.

The murder of a Bend, Ore., trucker in Fernley Sunday night has investigators retracing his driving route and examining locations where he may have stopped.

A composite sketch of a man seen in the area by a young resident is also being circulated to neighbors and business owners. Lyon County Sergeant John Arndell said no one has been able to identify the unknown man.

Investigators believe Roger L. Kelly, 50, was working on his late-model Kenworth rig when he was shot in the chest at close range. The body was discovered outside the parking lot of the Best Western Fernley Inn a little after 9 p.m. He was not registered at the motel.

Arndell said Kelly was finishing the last leg of a trip that brought him from Kentucky to Fernley, where he was scheduled to drop off a load. He was then scheduled to travel north to his home in Bend. Family members have been notified of his death.

According to a log book found inside the truck, Kelly stopped in Wells that morning and an unknown rest area later in the day.

The man sought by investigators is described as white, in his late 20s, 6 feet tall, and slender with shoulder-length brown-blond hair.
