U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., has been selected as this year's grand marshal of the Nevada Day Parade.
Nevada Day will be observed Oct. 27-29 this year, and this will be Bryan's 22nd year in the parade.
It will be the first official three-day Nevada Day celebration. The parade that Saturday will commemorate Nevada's entrance into the union on Oct. 31, 1864.
"I could think of no greater honor than to be the grand marshal of the Nevada Day Parade during my last official year in public office," said Bryan, who is not seeking re-election.
"I want to thank Nevada Day Inc. as well as the Nevada Commission on Tourism's Pioneer Territory, for giving me this wonderful opportunity. Both Bonnie and I are thrilled to be participating in the Nevada Day activities in this capacity.
"The 59th annual Nevada Day Parade will be a fine celebration and as always a proud day for all Nevadans."
When Bryan was governor, he and Bonnie began the tradition of hosting an annual chili feed on Nevada Day. This will be their 19th year.
For the last three years, Bryan has arranged for U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets from the Fallon Naval Air Station to officially start the annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City.
The Nevada Commission on Tourism's Pioneer Territory nominated Bryan to be grand marshal of the 2000 Nevada Day Parade. This year's theme will be "Pioneering into the Millennium."
