WASHINGTON - Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and Richard Bryan, both Democrats, say police in Nevada will receive $81,329 to buy bulletproof vests.
"Without federal assistance, some local law enforcement agencies could not afford this additional level of protection," said Bryan.
"Today's criminals are more violent and better armed than ever before and this funding will save lives by providing police around Nevada with badly needed bulletproof vests," said Reid.
Eleven jurisdictions will receive grants under the Bullet Proof Vest Partnership Act topped by $32,850 to Clark County.
In the north, Elko, Mineral and Humboldt counties are each to receive $3,000 from the grant money. Fallon will get $3,142 and West Wendover on the Utah, Nevada border will get $2,538.
But a majority of the money will go to southern Nevada agencies including $7,212 to Las Vegas, $6,000 apiece to North Las Vegas and Henderson and $3,000 to Boulder City.
The remaining $11,587 will go to the state of Nevada for its law enforcement officers.
