The Nevada Yankees amateur baseball team will open its 2000 summer season with a home game against the Tahoe Emeralds today at 5 p.m. at Lampe Park.
On Sunday, the Yankees will travel to South Lake Tahoe for a rematch with the Emeralds at 6 p.m.
The Yankees' roster will be made up primarily of recent local high school graduates who are playing baseball in college.
Dennis Young is entering his second summer as the head coach of the Yankees, who will be playing in the California-based Stan Musial League, which includes teams from Sacramento, San Mateo, Vacaville and Burlingame.
"The main thing is just to keep some of these college kids playing though the summer," Young said. "We want to keep them playing so they stay sharp and improve their skills.
"We're going to be playing some really good teams. The schedule is going to be pretty decent and hopefully we can do better than we did last year."
The Yankees finished the 1999 season with a 15-19 record.
