PLACERVILLE - El Dorado County prosecutors filed new information this month charging Edwin Robert Carlevato with the attempted abduction on a 20-year-old woman in September 1998.
Carlevato, 46, was already facing eight felony counts charging him with the Oct. 31 kidnapping and rape of a 51-year-old woman, and the July 10 kidnapping and sexual assault of a 34-year-old woman. A preliminary hearing on the case that was scheduled for Thursday was continued to allow Carlevato's defense more time to go through the evidence discovery process. A hearing is set for Jan. 13 at 8 a.m. Carlevato is being held in the El Dorado County Jail, and bail is set at $750,000.
For the September incident, the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office added one count of assault with the intent to commit a felony; a count of kidnapping; and a count of assault with a deadly weapon. According to investigators, the woman's attempted abductor tried to pull her into his car at gun point.
With just the original eight charges, Carlevato was facing the possibility of five life-term sentences if convicted.
Carlevato, a dealer at the Jackson Rancheria Casino, was arrested Nov. 4 after several people reportedly called police and identified him as the man sought by police. The suspect's picture, obtained from a convenience store videotape, was run by media outlets.
