A funeral for Arthur Richard Cavanaugh, 70, a Sparks resident for the past year, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McDermitt Combined School's new gymnasium in McDermitt.
Mr. Cavanaugh died Nov. 9, 1999, at Tahoe-Pacific Hospital in Sparks. He was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Winnemucca, to George and Theresa Sope Cavanaugh.
Before moving to Sparks, he lived in McDermitt.
Mr. Cavanaugh was a rancher and well-known contractor/carpenter and underground miner. He was also a Humboldt County school bus driver.
He was a representative to Washington, D.C., for tribal arts for the western United States, an avid traditional singer and teacher of traditional songs and tribal chairman of the international Council of Nevada and the Nevada Indian Affairs Commission. He worked with the Ft. McDermitt Paiute/Shoshone Tribe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Crutcher in August 1988 and brother, Stanley in December 1996.
Among his survivors are his sons Arthur Jr., of Carson City and Raphael Bell of Schurz; daughter, Gwyn Cavanaugh, of McDermitt; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Burial will be at the Ft. McDermitt Indian Cemetery in Ft. McDermitt.
