Obituary: Paul Opitz

A memorial service for Paul F. Opitz, 77, a Sierra Vista, Ariz., resident and former Carson City resident for 24 years, will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Brewery Arts Center.

Mr. Opitz died Dec. 8, 1999, at his residence. He was born April 18, 1922, in Neenah, Wis., to Frank and Ruth Opitz.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1943.

During his residence in Carson City, Mr. Opitz was a principal founding member and served as interim executive director of the Brewery Arts Center. He was active in Proscenium Players and performed volunteer work at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. He was president of the Host Lions Club shortly before moving to Arizona.

He saw action in World War II and Korea and from 1958-61 was stationed at the ammunition depot in Hawthorne. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander.

Among his survivors are his wife of 54 years, Carolyn, of Sierra Vista; son and wife, Frank A. and Susan of Little Rock, Ark.; daughters, Elizabeth W. Mitchell of Carson City, Sarah L. and Mike Entwistle of Reno and Annie O. and Al Olsen of Dallas; sister, Marjorie Burridge, of Libertyville, Ill., 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at the Four Square Gospel Church, Celebration Chapel, in Sierra Vista.

Foothills Memorial Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
