Parade day events

Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk at 7 a.m.

Enter either as a runner or a walker in the annual Nevada Day Classic, which benefits Carson City Special Olympics.

Applicants are encouraged to register early at Fleet Feet Sports at 3807 South Carson St. near Mervyns of California.

Applicants who preregister can collect a race packet, including shirt and number on Oct. 29 at Fleet Feet Sports from noon until 7 p.m.

Register on the day at Carson Nugget from 7 a.m. until 8 a.m.

Early registration fee is $17 and on-the-day registration is $20.

All three races start from the corner of Telegraph Street and Curry Street The 2-mile walk starts at 8:15 a.m., the 2-mile run starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 8-kilometer run starts at 8:35.

Pancake Breakfast 7-10 a.m.

Eat pancakes for breakfast and raise money for the Republican Women's Club. Breakfast will be offered from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. at Carson City Community Center.

Dedication of Charles Friend Park at 9 a.m.

A park, located on the east side of Fifth Street and Stewart Street, will be dedicated in memory of local astronomer Charles Friend. The dedication is being organized by the Carson City Preservation Coalition.

Nevada Day Parade at 10 a.m.

Fallon Naval Base jets flying over Carson City will mark the opening of this year's Nevada Day Parade. It is expected to finish at about 2 p.m.

The parade will start from the corner of Highway 50 and Highway 395 and head south to Stewart Street.

At 8 a.m. Carson Street will be close from Winnie Lane to Fairview Drive until the parade is over.

Nevada Day Celebrations at Mills Park Oct. 27 through Oct. 31

Knock down the bottles, shoot down the ducks, catch a fish or race a horse at Mills Park's Midway games.

A new carnival will include children and grown-up rides.

Refreshments and gifts will be on sale.

On opening day, Oct. 27, a family day special includes an all-day pass for $10.

Proceeds will benefit Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Admission fee for rides.

La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at noon-7 p.m.

Dance, eat Indian tacos and peruse crafts at Carson Colony Gym. The Pow Wow will be offered from 7 p.m. on Oct. 29, from noon until 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 and from noon until 7 p.m.

Sen. Richard and Mrs. Bonnie Bryan's Annual Chili Feed at 2 p.m.

Marking the couple's 17th year of offering chili to Nevada Day revelers, lunch will be served between noon at 2 p.m. upstairs at the Carson Nugget.

"The senator spends all night cooking," the senator's spokesman Tom Baker said. "No, not really, it's supplied by the Nugget and the senator serves it up and it's great chili.

The chili feed is a continuation from Bryan's days as governor and it's a chance for him to catch up with old friends, Baker said.

Capitol City Band Concert and Dedication of the Amphitheater at 2 p.m..

Following the Nevada Day Parade, listen to the Capitol City Band. The band will perform in the new amphitheater in the Legislative Plaza.

The amphitheater will be dedicated at 3 p.m.

"This is a fun group that loves to play together. Most of us were in high school bands and have dusted off our instruments and started playing again as adults. We call ourselves the 'Ambassadors of Music,'" The Capitol City Band director Richard Doede said.

Beard Contest at 2 p.m.

Whether it's red, well groomed, unkempt, salt 'n pepper or plain old long, if you have a beard let the Supreme Court Justices judge it.

The traditional beard competition will be held on the capitol steps immediately following the Nevada Day Parade.

Annual Nevada Day Bash and Benefit noon to 8 p.m. and Making Millennium Magic from 8:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. at the Ormsby House on Oct. 30.

Enter a raffle and you could win a trip for two to the Super Bowl or a trip for four to Disney Land or $500 and at the same time you'll help two Carson City children on the road to recovery.

The annual Nevada Day Bash is in its third year. This year proceeds will benefit the Bond family.

Siblings 7-year-old Trevor and 12-year-old Stephanie Bond were severely burned in a 1997-house fire in Elko. Both children require extensive skin grafts and every six months they travel to Sacramento, Calif. for the treatment.

The proceeds will help pay for their regular trips and the living expenses when Trevor and Stephanie's mom, Lori, takes time off from work to care for them.

Event organizers are appealing for volunteers to help run the day's events, donations for the dozens of prizes being offered and brisk raffle ticket sales.

The events will include balloon popping and games in the ballroom, a barbecue in the parking lot and a band. The day will culminate in fireworks.
