Parents must unite to teach children

Having attented the recent discussion concerning the GATE program and its future at Fritsch Elementary School, it is apparent that we are united in our mission to provide a challenging well-rounded education for our children. With limited financial resources we must continue to set priorities and be realistic about what the program should and should not be.

We must first recognize and acknowledge the tremendous enthusiasim and commitment that the teachers demonstrate here at Fritsch. It is through this enthusiasm and commitment that our children are receiving an education that builds on individual strengths and encourages development in areas of weakness. We ask of these teachers to continue their exceptional efforts, as we are laying the foundation for our children's future success.

I question if we should be asking the teachers and the school district to provide even more than what is offered. With financial and personnel limitations, I am concerned that the programs already in place will suffer with additional demands. We must not allow ourselves to fall victim to the thought that more is better. Quantity vs. Quality is the key.

We as parents, must take it upon ourselves to join forces and unite in providing chanllenging and stimulating activities and opportunities to our children. We must not forget that education goes beyond reading, writing and arithmetic. We must be teaching our children the other "R"s" of life; Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, and Resilience.

I would encourage each and every one of us to remember that our kids need to be kids. The simple act of providing supervised playtime with friends and extending an invitation to other children to join you in activities or projects can be the greatest gift we can give our children.

We need to be teaching real life skills outside the classroom. We must allow our children to have unstructured time to develop critical thing skills and the freedom to explore the wonders of the world. It will be through our example and our outreach that we will be in the position of providing our children the challenges and learning opportunities that will enhance and compliment their academic education.

It is my hope that next year we will offer a school directory, providing parents a resource to open communication amongst each other. Until that time, we must take comfort in knowing that our children are receiving an exceptional education and that our children's futures are bright.
