Parnell and Simons file

Carson City Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell filed for a second term in office Tuesday.

The Democrat is opposed by longtime Republican community activist Jeanne Simons, who filed Monday along with most other GOP legislative candidates.

Parnell said reapportionment and finding long-term economic solutions for Nevada are her top concerns.

"My focus for reapportionment will be ensuring that Carson City continues to be well represented after new district lines have been drawn," she said.

She said the economic and budgetary solutions will center on assessing and debating the recommendations from the governor's fundamental review process.

Parnell has been a classroom teacher for 25 years and is a former Nevada PTA president. She was selected as Nevada Teacher of the Year in 1998.

She said her concerns also include senior issues and safety and accountability in public schools.

She said she believes she is doing a good job representing District 40, which is the only legislative district completely contained within Carson City.

Simons has been active in a number of areas, particularly school issues such as freeing up state laws and funding for charter schools.

"I believe I would represent everyone, not just Republicans," she said.

She also says she supports a decent pay raise for state workers who make up a substantial portion of the voters in Carson City.
