A portable building was installed next to Fernley High School to accommodate additional classes offered through Western Nevada Community College.
Bus Scharmann, dean of the Fallon campus and extended programs, said that WNCC has offered classes at Fernley High School for the past 25 years but classes had to be scheduled after regular school hours.
"We wanted to expand the small program we've been running to include daytime and industry training," Scharmann said.
The 70 by 30 foot portable building includes two classrooms and a computer lab.
Annette Pressey, the Fernley Center Coordinator, said she anticipates an increase in enrollment because of the new building.
"I think it's going to add to our enrollment," she said. "It will allow for more flexibility because many of our students work nights."
The computer lab will also be helpful to Fernley students.
"It will be good to take some pressure off of the computer lab at the high school," Scharmann said.
Pressey said that the computer center may draw in business that want to send their employees to business-training classes.
Scharmann said that in the past, classes have been mainly in the liberal arts area but they now plan to include classes that are more industry-specific for the area.
He said there is a need in Fernley for computer training, mid-management training and electronics training.
The building should be fully functional in February and in full use by fall semester, Pressey said.
