Chandler Allen and Evan McQuirk both recorded grand slam home runs for the Senators as Carson High School picked up a 16-8 Northern 4A baseball win on the road against Elko on Tuesday.

Carson improved its record to 13-5 in Northern 4A play, good for third place in the zone standings. Elko, which had defeated Carson at McNutt Field on March 23, dropped to 4-14 and is now in 11th place out of the 13 Northern 4A high schools.

Carson pounded out 18 hits during the game. Joe Mercer was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, Allen was 3-for-4 with four RBIs on his fifth-inning grand slam, Nick Gitthens was 3-for-4 and Carl Winter was 2-for-4.

Allen started for the Senators, but it was Ben Moore who picked up the win for Carson by pitching the final three innings of the game.

Carson scored all of its runs in outbursts in three innings; the Senators scored five in the first, five in the fifth and six in the sixth.

Carson plays at Douglas on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The first Carson-Douglas meeting of the year on March 9 resulted in a double forfeit after a bench-clearing brawl.

3A Baseball (Non-division)

Yerington 7, ROP 6

Yerington came back from a 6-4 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs to escape with a narrow non-division win over the Rams. The Lions' winning run came on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Andrew Malarchik, which scored Zach Roots.

"They did fine just when they needed to," said Yerington coach George Ostrander of the Lions' last-inning rally.

Down by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Yerington began to rally when Nick Carlgren doubled and Alex Tapia then tripled. The Lions tied the score when Billy Snow then singled. Yerington then loaded the bases to set up Malarchik's winning RBI bunt.

Roots pitched the first six innings to pick up the win for the Lions.

The Lions top hitter during the game was Alex Tapia, who was 2-for-3 with a double and triple and two RBIs.

Yerington (10-7, 4-4) resumes Division II play on Saturday when it hosts Manogue in an important doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.

Fernley 8, Incline 2

Vaquero pitchers Matt Lambeth and Levi Diaz combined to strike out 15 Highlander batters as Fernley improved its overall record to 13-6 with its home victory.

Starter Lambeth struck out eight batters in four innings and Diaz fanned seven batters as he secured the win for the Vaqueros with three innings of relief. In addition to their high strikeout total, the two pitchers allowed only three hits.

"To have two pitchers combine for 15 strikeouts was an impressive performance," said Fernley coach James Huckaby, whose Fernley team will play at Dayton today at 3:30 p.m.

Eight Fernley batters recorded RBIs for the Vaqueros.

Tyler Selden and Al Polito were both 2-for-3. Selden had a double included in his hit total.

Fernley resumes Division I play on Saturday with a doubleheader against North Tahoe.
