Prep Roundup for Oct. 17

WINNEMUCCA - Carie Ostrander recorded six kills and three aces as Carson High School romped to a 15-3, 15-12, 15-6 win over helpless Lowry in a Northern 4A volleyball match on Saturday.

Kaitlin Leck added 10 kills and seven aces for Carson (9-3), while setter Davina Carter had 30 assists. Jen Saunders and Erin Menath both had six kills apiece as well.

The Senators still have a hold on a playoff spot going into a tough regular-season finish against Douglas, Reno and South Tahoe - all teams they are battling with for the top spot in the standings.

"We played OK tonight," Carson coach Daryl James said. "It's gonna be a dog fight the rest of the way."

Carson will host Reno at 5:45 p.m. at home in a game that should help clear up the playoff picture.

Northern 4A Girls' Soccer

Douglas 9, Hug 1

RENO - Six senior players were presented with roses before the game on seniors day, they were given starting roles, and they all contributed to the Tigers victory against Hug.

Sarah Shearer, Julia Spaulding, Ali Shea and Stephanie Webb combined to score seven goals and distribute six assists, while the defensive tandem of Mariah Weigel and Stephanie Haws helped shut down the Hawks as Douglas improved its Division II-leading record to 14-1-1.

Shearer had two goals and three assists and Spaulding scored two goals to lead the Tigers. Shea scored her first goal of the season (16 players on the team have now scored) and added an assist and Webb chipped in with a goal and an assist within a minute of each other in the second half.

Douglas is in position to clinch the Division II championship Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Carson in a 3:30 p.m. contest in Minden.

Galena 10, Lowry 0

WINNEMUCCA - Annie Baxter continued her torrid offensive output by having a hand in nine goals, scoring five and assisting on four as the Grizzlies rolled to victory.

Baxter scored two of her goals in the first half before breaking out for three more in the second half, including one on a penalty kick. Bianca Sciotto had two goals of her own for the Grizzlies (9-4-2), who have a strong hold on second place in Division I.

"You go away feeling good from a game like this," Galena coach Tom Canino said. "It's nice to see you can score a lot of goals, but we also know we couldn't practice some of the things we need to improve on in a game like this."

Jayleen Chen faced little pressure from Lowry's offense, but she did record two saves. Galena travels to South Tahoe for a game at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Northern 4A Boys' Soccer

DOUGLAS 5, HUG 0

Dylan Sheridan scored twice, while T.J. Plummer had one goal and an assist to help Douglas stay in contention for first-place in Division II with a victory at Hug.

Douglas (11-3-2) opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Nick Hernandez beat an offside trap and fed Rob Honer for a shot inside the box.

Sheridan scored five minutes later when he beat a defender to the near post and blasted a shot past Hug's goalkeeper.

Chad Love and Adam Shelton shared time in the net to earn credit for Douglas' shutout.

The Tigers face an important test at home against defending state champion Carson at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Galena 17, Lowry 0

WINNEMUCCA - Kevin Hill had all four of his goals in the first half as the Grizzlies cruised in a laugher against the Buckaroos.

Lowry didn't manage a shot on goal all game against an impenetrable Galena defense.

Hill scored Galena's first goal three minutes in, then added goals at the 16- and 17-minute marks. Rodrigo Vazquez scored the Grizzlies' next two goals, and then Hill made it 6-0 with a goal in the 30th minute.

Vazquez also had an assist for Galena.

Galena, which had 10 goals in the second half, will travel to face South Tahoe at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

3A Division II Boys' Soccer

Lovelock 3, Dayton 1

Jose Marquez scored Dayton's lone goal in the second half as the Dust Devils fell to Lovelock.

Lovelock grabbed a 3-0 lead by halftime, but Marquez found the net off a nice pass from Marc Wheeler. Shaun Merrill and Carlos Reyes gave Dayton strong contributions on the field, as did fullback Matt Rodriguez and halfback John Ring.

Dayton (0-6) will host Whittell at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

3A Division II Girls' Soccer

Dayton 2, Lovelock 1

The Dust Devils held on in the second half despite a strong Mustang charge to claim its first league victory of the season.

Shannon Fleming gave Dayton a 1-0 halftime lead after taking a pass from Kim Wilson and finding the back of the net. Stephanie Nickerson added an unassisted goal late in the second half to help the Dust Devils (1-4-1) build a 2-0 lead.

Dayton goalie Amanda Fleming had six saves. Jamie Laird, Marissa Wheeler and Becky Clark all had strong games as well.

Dayton hosts Whittell at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Bishop Manogue 12, Yerington 1

RENO - Stacy Tibbals scored the Lions' lone goal in the 35th minute but Yerington fell to a strong Manogue team.

"It was a beautiful team to watch," Yerington coach Sherry Montero said of Manogue. "It wasn't a pretty day, but I'm proud of my girls because they didn't play defeated."

Tibbals scored her goal off a pass from Melissa Jangula to cut Manogue's lead to 6-1. Shellie Marriott added an outstanding defensive day for Yerington.

"I know that's weird to say given the score, but she just stayed in there and kept at it," Montero said. "She was all over out there and didn't give up."

Yerington (4-6-2, 2-4-1 Division II) will travel to face Lovelock at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
