Religion: Temple begins annual summer guest rabbi program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Temple Bat Yam in South Lake Tahoe begins its annual summer guest rabbi program, to feature five rabbis and two cantors conducting Friday night services between Friday and Aug. 25.

The visiting clergy program begins at 7:30 p.m. this Friday with Cantor Eli Cohen, a widely known lay cantor and teacher of Jewish mysticism from Santa Cruz, Calif., whose melodic voice captivated attendees during his past visits. As a special treat, Cantor Cohen will also conduct a musical Chavurah friendship group meeting at the temple, at 3260 Pioneer Trail, at 7 p.m. Saturday, as part of the temple's year-long celebration of its new Torah project.

Although Temple Bat Yam is a Reform Jewish congregation, Cantor Cohen will feature a broad spectrum of musical melodies from many segments of Judaism, from Orthodox to Jewish Renewal movements.

Friday and Saturday's programs are for the entire family and each will include a dessert reception afterward.
