Scalawags win tourney in Davis

Several soccer teams from Carson City traveled to Davis, Calif., for the 14th Annual Davis World Cup Soccer Tournament last weekend, and one emerged victorious in the three-day event.

The Under-12 girls team, the Scalawags, took first place in their division to win the tourney. Representing Norway in the tournament, the team beat Granada Hills 6-0 in the championship game.

The 13 team members are: Allison Foltz, Annie Brinson, Katherine Kane, Sophie Raphael, Megan Foley, Cassie Bowman, Emma Jaquette, Michelle VanEpps, Sami Valerius, Casey Johnson, Kaitlin Burroughs, Nicole Scott and Jennifer Sturm. The team is coached by Dennis Brinson.

Each team was given a country to represent during the tournament.

The boys Under-12 team C.C. United, coached by Don Thayer and Derwin Leigh and representing Italy, came in second in their division. No Carson City Under-12 boys team has ever placed so high.

Also, the Under-10 boys coached by Brinson took third place, and Don Thayer and Jon Rogers' Under-14 girls team also took third. The Under-14 girls had 6 shutout wins, and their only loss was in double overtime.

Saturday

Game 1: Carson 4, Panama 0. With single goals scored by Royal Good, Jose Aguilar, and two from Micah Laack, the team started off on the right foot. The defense held tight, led by Jeremiah Teeter, Derwin Leigh Jr., Kevin Brush, and Joseph Schwedhelm, and Jesus Lozano.

Game 2: Poland 1, Italy 0. Poland eeked out a one-goal win over, while Italy had valiant efforts from Tony Zevnick, Evan Thayer, Lozano, and Tyler Metcalf.

Sunday

Game 3: Italy 2, Dominican 0. In another close game, Italy won on two goals by Jose Aguilar. It was a definite team effort, as Logan Ahl, Mats Boehnke, Zevnick, Metcalf, Thayer and the rest of the team kept that one goal lead to come out victorious!

Game 4: Italy 4, Indonesia 0. Under the scoring of Edgar Gomez, Jose Aguilar, Micah Laack, and Tom Edwards, Italy defeated Indonesia handily in Game 4 of the tournament. Defense was once again led by Jeremiah Teeter, Derwin Leigh, Jr., Kevin Brush, Joseph Schwedhlem and the rest of the dynamic defense.

Game 5: Italy 5, Kazakhstan 1. The boys were fired up in the California heat, as they took on their opponents in Game 5. Once again, single goals were scored by Good, Edwards, and Laack, with two by Jose Aguilar. The defense once again stood proud, holding the opposing team to just one goal.

Monday

Game 6: Italy 4, Yugoslavia 1. Single goals scored by Edwards and Laack, and two by Aguilar, gave Carson an easy victory over their opponents, while the defense's Teeter, Leigh, Brush, Ahl, Boehnke and Gomez held Yugoslavia to only one goal.

Game 7: Poland 7, Italy 1. The single goal by Laack in the second quarter wasn't enough to put Poland away, as the mighty C.C. United team put a valiant effort against Poland, who let loose with seven goals in the championship. The Carson City Boys did their best to hold them off, but it seemed as though nothing could stop them, and first place slipped through United's fingers.
