Senior citizens law academy accepting signups

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is taking signups for its fifth annual Senior Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy.

The academy provides a crime education program for senior citizens that will help make them more aware and comfortable with law enforcement and give officers a better understanding of the needs of senior citizens.

The academy, which is also sponsored by Douglas County Triad, is held once a week Tuesday, March 28, through Tuesday, June 6. Classes will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the sheriff's station in Minden.

During the 10-week academy, students will have classes in: uniform patrol, criminal investigations, emergency vehicle operations, hand gun qualification, crime scene processing, narcotic and gang investigations, the criminal justice system, emergency communications, corrections, fire prevention and emergency medical information.

Class size is limited to 50 students. All students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County. All applicants must be willing to submit to a local background check and have no felony convictions.
