Snowshoe for a 'peak' experience

Are you looking for a "peak" experience while snowshoeing in mountainous backcountry?

If you are, a free, 6-hour snowshoe trek for snowshoers only is being offered on Sunday. It will be led by park rangers with the California State Park System.

The outing will begin at Donner Memorial State Park, which is located at the east edge of Donner Lake. The lake is just west of Truckee, Calif., about 45 miles from Carson City.

Participants are requested to meet at 10 a.m. at the Donner Memorial State Park Museum.

The degree of difficulty is rated as "moderate to difficult" with a roundtrip of 6-8 miles. The elevation of the trek will be from 7,200 feet to 8,700 feet.

Designed for the intermediate snowshoer who already has attended a beginning snowshoe hike and is in pretty good physical condition.

Plan to eat lunch on the peak of a mountain.

This hike will give you an opportunity to increase your snowshoeing skills while enjoying a backcountry experience.

Participants are requested to provide their own snowshoes, warm boots, to wear layered clothing for variable weather and carry water, snacks and lunch. Also bring sunscreen, sunglasses, goggles, camera (optional), hat and gloves.
