Sunridge turn lanes added

INDIAN HILLS - New turn lanes and approaches have been added to the Highway 395 South intersection with South Sunridge Drive and Plymouth Way, but traffic lights will not grace the area yet.

"As the contractor improved the intersection, conduits were placed for traffic signal electrical wiring," Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Scoff Magruder said Wednesday. "But we have no date yet when traffic lights would go in."

The improvements - a second left-turn lane for southbound traffic, acceleration and deceleration lanes for highway traffic and realignment of Plymouth Drive - were triggered by construction of the third phase of houses in the Sunridge Subdivision on the east side of the highway.

"A decision to place traffic signals would be based on peak-hour traffic and left-turn movement in and out of Sunridge, as well as the number of cars entering and exiting Plymouth," Magruder said. That information would come from a future traffic study, he said.

Sunridge Corp., owned by Las Vegas Paving Co., also has built a 27-hole golf course at the subdivision and has 46 acres close to the highway designated for commercial development.

Bill Wellman of Sunridge said last month that the company had received a letter of intent from Costco for a possible store on 15 acres of the site. However, Costco is currently in negotiations with Carson City for about 18 acres farther north on Highway 395, next to Fuji Park.

Other major retailers are interested in the Sunridge location, including one developer who wants 25 acres, Wellman said last December.
