Two Carson High seniors and their dates, who would not otherwise be able to attend this spring's prom, will get to go thanks to Soroptimists International and local businesses.
The organization has solicited services from at least six businesses to provide everything from food to tuxedos for the lucky couples.
The only criteria is that the students must attend Carson High School and be economically unable to attend the prom.
Applications for the special prom night are available at the high school counselor's office. Forms are due back to Shari Marinari in the Guidance Office by March 17.
Joan Zadny, president of Soroptimist International of Carson City, said the Soroptimists would review the submitted essays and decide within a week.
"We will be reading their essays and choosing one boy and one girl," she said. "We are going to send a total of four people, including the dates."
According to Zadny, sending two couples to the May 6 prom fits the Soroptimists' theme for this year.
"This fits in with what we've been doing this year," she said. "We've been doing things to help the underprivileged youth of Carson City."
The organization is still seeking donors for flowers and dresses. Any business interested in donating should call Zadny at 885-6310.
Zadny said the recent controversy over who could attend the prom sparked the idea for the program.
"There was a lot of negative publicity and we wanted to replace that with something positive," Zadny said.
