Textbooks in students' possession

Hundreds of textbooks for Carson High School students have arrived.

"The books were ordered and are in use. Mr. Adair assures us that we have the appropriate number of books," Carson School District Superintendent Jim Parry said at Tuesday night's school board meeting.

"I'm glad about that because I had a few calls," Carson City School Board President Gary Ailes said.

In fact, the books were ordered on Sept. 10, they arrived on Sept. 24 and they were stamped and handed out to students on Sept. 27, Carson High School Principal Glen Adair said Tuesday night.

In a telephone interview Oct. 8, Adair said he was unsure if the books had arrived.

"I don't know what I was thinking when I said that," Adair said.

Adair said he was unsure about the whereabouts of the books last week because the school had been disrupted by three days of students taking either the TerraNova or High School Proficiency exams.

Several parents of high school students voiced concern about the shortage of books. There were always enough class sets of textbooks, but there were not enough books for students to take home, Adair said.

The shortage arose from a revisions in the ninth- and tenth-grade math curriculum. The teachers were also encouraging all ninth-graders to take physical science and all tenth-graders to take biology, Adair said.
