Three days left to file for elections

Only three days remain to file for election to Carson City and state offices.

Filing ends Monday at 5 p.m.

Candidates are scarce for the 12 elected positions open in Carson City, which range from a seat in the state assembly to school board trustee.

So far, only the seat for the state assembly, District 40, is being challenged. Carson City Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell's run for a second term is being challenged by Republican Jeanne Simons.

Incumbents Mayor Ray Masayko, Ward 2 Supervisor Jon Plank, Departments 1 and 2 Justices of the Peace Robey Willis and John Tatro are unopposed for their positions so far.

Ward 4 Supervisor Kay Bennett is vacating her position of 12 years on the Board of Supervisors at the end of the year. Former planning commission chairman Verne Horton is the only Carson City resident who has filed for the Ward 4 seat.

Two seats remain open on the Carson City School Board. Doug Ponn replaced former trustee Julie Butler in March. Ponn filed for election to the District 2 seat last week.

Trustee for District 5 Gary Ailes said in March he had no plan to run for re-election, leaving his seat open. John McKenna, school board trustee for District 5 or Gary Ailes, school board trustee for District 7, hadn't filed for reelection by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Carson-Tahoe Hospital Board of Trustee Chairman Tom Metcalf filed for reelection to trustee District 3. Trustee Caleb Mills filed for reelection to District 4. Trustee Basil Chryssos has not filed for reelection to the hospital's District 2 seat.

Supervisors and school board and hospital trustees must live in the district they represent, but voters cast ballots citywide. There are filing fees ranging from $100 to $30 for each office. To file, go to the Carson City Courthouse Clerk-Recorder's office at 851 E. Musser St. Suite 1025.
