Wolf Pack beats Fullerton, Feather River sweeps

FULLERTON, Calif. - Don Price drove in two runs with a two-out bloop double in the top of the ninth inning to lift the University of Nevada to a 7-5 Far West Conference baseball victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.

The Wolf Pack scored twice in the eighth inning and then added four more runs in the ninth to pick up a come-from-behind in the finale of the three-game series between Big West front-runners at Goodwin Field.

The game resulted in a no-decision for Carson City's Darrell Rasner, who threw 6.1 innings. The freshman right-hander allowed five runs on 12 hits, struck out four and walked two.

Ryan Church (1-1) came on to pitch one-hit ball the rest of the way and earn credit for the win.

Church helped himself out with his bat in the ninth. With two outs and Joe Inglett at first, Church singled to left to put runners at the corners. Matt Ortiz followed with a single up the middle to make it 5-4 and Price hit a bloop double that fell between three Titans in shallow center field.

This marked the first win in six games this season for Nevada (31-17, 15-9) against Cal State Fullerton (30-16, 17-7), ranked No. 17 in last week's Collegiate Baseball poll.

Fullerton leads Long Beach State by one game and Nevada by two games with two weeks remaining in the conference season. Nevada plays three games this coming weekend against Pacific in Stockton, Calif., and then finishes with a series at Long Beach State on May 19-21.

Feather River sweeps

Feather River College kept its hopes to earning a berth in the California community college baseball playoffs alive by sweeping a doubleheader from Shasta on Saturday in Quincy, Calif.

Jason Price, a sophomore right-hander from Carson City, pitched Feather River to a 3-2 win in the opener and Jeremy Kinney, a sophomore left-hander from Dayton, pitched two-hit ball over seven innings as the Golden Eagles took a 5-1 verdict in game two.

Both of the local products have indicated their plans to move on and play at four-year schools next year - Price at Nevada and Kinney at the University of San Francisco.

Two Douglas graduates contributed offensively in Saturday's second game: T.J. Bond, now Feather River's starting catcher, collected three hits; and third baseman Bruce Jacobsen hit a triple.

Pairings for the upcoming California community college playoffs will be announced this coming week.
