Boy suffers spinal injury in early morning wreck

An early morning accident on Sunday has left a 14-year-old Carson City boy in serious condition with a spinal chord injury.

Kevin Petersen was the passenger in a vehicle driven by his brother David, 28, when high speeds and wet road conditions contributed to the vehicle careening off the roadway at around 5:50 a.m. All three occupants were ejected from the vehicle, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

None of the victims was wearing a seat belt.

Also injured was passenger Thomas Howard, 18, who was treated and released from Carson Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.

The trio was delivering papers for the Nevada Appeal.

The accident occurred on Highway 395 near Leviathan Mine Road in Douglas Springs.

Both Petersens were transported to Washoe Medical Center, where Kevin is listed in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit and David is in stable condition in orthopedics.

The accident is under investigation, Trooper Mike Teeuden said.
