Fremont back in session
by Teri Vance, Appeal Staff Writer
Although today is Allison Cowan's first day in the third grade at Fremont Elementary School, she's already met her teacher, Kathy Rothchild.
"I think she's really nice and she's funny, too," said Allison, 8.
Allison was one of about 300 students from the year-round school who attended an open house Monday designed to orient students, parents and teachers.
"We're welcoming the returnees and greeting the new ones," said Fremont Elementary principal Jan Sullivan. "It eases the anxiety for the children on the first day."
But it wasn't just the children who were feeling anxious.
"I feel like I'm going to cry," said Jaimi Dawes, who brought her daughter Ann, 5, to check out the kindergarten classroom. "I'm excited, but at the same time I'm scared."
Taylor Anderson, 8, will be in the third grade and is over the first-day fears. They've shifted to first-day blues.
"I don't want to go because all you do sometimes is homework," Taylor said. "I'd like to stay home and play on my trampoline."
Patty Reyes brought her three children, Miguel Camacho, 9, Luis Camacho, 7, and Stephanie Camacho, 5, to meet their new teachers.
She was most concerned, however, about Stephanie, who will begin kindergarten today.
"I'm excited," Stephanie said. "I want to go to school."
Still, her mom thought it would be best to attend the open house.
"I wanted to get to know her teacher a little bit before I just drop her off," Reyes said. "She's excited, but I know she'll be a bit nervous because she's never really been away from me."
Reyes said it is a tradition in their home for the children to have their pictures taken in front of the house on their way to the first day of school. They plan to continue that tradition today.
Sullivan expects to have about 635 students show up today, fewer than the 673 who attended the school last year.
Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the school district, said the community needs to be aware that the school is back in session. School bus stops are located throughout Carson City and many students will be walking.
"The school zones and bus stop locations will be enforced again," he said. "We want to make sure the motorists are careful of speed limit laws on normal streets as well."
Fremont Elementary School received a new phone system through the school bond. The new phone number is 283-1200.
