Joey Hooft's dramatic game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday helped lift the Carson Capitols amateur baseball team to the semifinals of the International Travel World Championships in Winter Haven, Fla.
Hooft's game-winning hit lifted Carson to a 4-3 win over Lake Gibson, Fla. Carson also routed Atlanta 10-0 to improve to 4-1 in the tournament.
The Capitols (44-16) will play Sarasota, Fla. Apopka baseball team today in the semifinals. The winner of the that game will face the winner between Cleveland and Orlando, Fla. in the championship game today.
Bub Madrid scored the winning run from second on Hooft's single against Lake Gibson. Quinn Monsma went the distance for the win.
Hooft was 2-for-4 with a double, Austin Graham went 2-for-2, Brett McMillan, Sean Scobee and Dustin Hahn all had a hit and an RBI and Carl Winter added a hit.
Against Atlanta, Brandon Evans pitched a six-hit shutout. Steve LeRud went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Sean Scobee had a hit and three RBIs, Hooft went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, Winter had a hit and two RBIs, Billy Paganetti had a double and an RBI and Dustin Pedroia and Madrid each added a hit.
