Aaron Holmes rushed for 147 yards, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, to help propel Carson High School to a 20-6 freshman football victory at home against Galena on Thursday afternoon.
Quarterback Kyle Bacon threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Mike Horrigan in the second quarter to give the Senators a 14-0 lead and they held on the rest of the way to even their season record at 1-1.
Galena scored at the outset of the fourth quarter when Ben Fry broke a 50-yard touchdown run, but Carson put the game out of reach when Brian Welch intercepted a pass and returned the ball to Galena's 12 with 4:20 left to play. Moments later, Bacon scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to extend Carson's lead to 20-6.
Derek Shoaf slammed the door shut for the Senators when he intercepted another Galena pass with 1:41 to go.
Carson finished the game with 233 yards rushing and 15 yards passing. In addition to Holmes, who had 147 yards on 15 carries, Austin Watson rushed for 34 yards on nine carries.
Galena gained 129 yards on the ground, led by Fry with 74 yards on 11 carries. The Grizzlies enjoyed an 11-6 advantage in first downs.
