A memorial service for Edward H. Howard, 85, a Reno resident for the past 40 years, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Ave.,
Reno.
He graduated from Bates College in 1938. He earned an master of arts degree in English at Tufts University and did doctoral studies at Boston University.
Mr. Howard was a professor of American literature at Boston University for 15 years. After moving to Reno, he began teaching at Reno High School and UNR. He was a consultant in English and reading for the State Department of Education. He also served as Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction. He continued working part-time after his retirement in 1979 as an instructor at UNR and Sierra Nevada College. He also supervised student teachers and did substitute teaching. He worked as an educator for 60 years, from 1938 until 1998.
He was also an accomplished church organist and choir director. A member of the American Guild of Organists, he gave recitals and directed the prestigious Concord Chorus in Concord, Mass. He was also the choir director and organist at Reno First Methodist Church during the early '60s.
Among his survivors are his wife Diane of Reno; sons David of Reno, Edward Jr. and Stephen, both of Massachusetts; daughters Mary Byrne of Gooding, Idaho, Martha Heidenreich of Ritzville, Wash. and Nancy Ward of Boise, Idaho; stepson Brad Wilkinson of Reno; stepdaughters Cathy Bopko of Phoenix, Ariz. and Vicki Carpenter of Ellensburg, Wash. and 18 grandchildren.
