Douglas boys, Dayton girls win track meet

A pair of sophomores, Evan Bill and Jake Petersen, showed some promise for the future and provided some key points for the Douglas High School boys track and field team during a three-way non-conference meet on Saturday in Carson City.

Bill sped to first-place in the 200-meter dash in 23.6 seconds and Petersen won the discus with a throw of 134-feet to help the Douglas boys edge Dayton 88-63 during competition at Carson High School's Jim Frank Track and Field Facility.

Dayton's girls won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays to outdistance Douglas and South Tahoe in the team scoring. Dayton scored 59Y points, followed by Douglas with 45Y and South Tahoe with 39.

The meet was a late addition to the schedule by Douglas coach Keith Cole, whose squad was idle competitively last week because of Easter vacation. The Tigers hadn't competed since the Elko Outer Relays on March 29 and they don't have another meet until the Reed Invitational, which will be held this coming Friday and Saturday.

"This was just something we put together at the last minute. I didn't want the kids to go two weeks without competing," Cole said. "This meet today gave us a chance to compete and also have a little bit of fun."

In addition to his victory in the 200 with a personal record time, Bill also combined with Drew Bateman, Andy McIntosh and Will Thomas to win the boys 4x100 relay in 46.0. The time was a season best for Douglas.

"It was encouraging to see Evan run like that, and I think he's capable of going even faster" Cole said.

Another highlight was supplied by Petersen in the discus ring with his personal record throw.

"That throw is the fourth best in the North right now," Cole said.

Douglas also got first-place performances from two seniors: Evan Berry in the shot put (40-7) and Will Thomas in the triple jump (42-1). Sophomore Mike King won the 800 in 2:19.

George Pass provided a highlight for Dayton as he won both of the hurdles races -- running 16.2 in the 110-meter highs and 45.6 in the 300 intermediates -- and placed second in the pole vault at 9-6. Dayton teammate Shaun Merrill won the pole vault at 10-6.

Dayton posted victories in three relay races: 4x200 (1:42.1), 4x400 (4:21.4) and 4x800 (9:16).

Dayton's girls won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Laurel Lehl won the girls pole vault for Dayton with a clearance of 7-9 for the Dust Devils.

The top individual winner in the girls competition was Karen Dalmacio of South Tahoe, who posted victories in the 100 meters (13.1), 200 (27.1) and 400 (1:02.0).
