An immense steam shovel was brought up last week from San Francisco for work on the highway between Spooner's Station and Incline. It crashed 400 feet to the bottom of the fill after driver Tom Freeland had backed it to allow traffic to pass. He barely jumped off as soft dirt gave way.

Old-time Virginia & Truckee Railroad employee Joseph Marin died of a heart attack while at work for Sierra Pacific Power Co. He lived for many years on V&T property near Dayton Highway and was a native of Romita, Mexico. He leaves wife, Hazel; son, Bill; and daughters Margaret, Josephine and Marceline.
