School board Trustee James Keegan resigned Monday for personal reasons, said Douglas County School District Superintendent John Soderman.

Keegan, who was elected to the District 5 seat in November 1999 and began serving his term in January 2000, was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

"I want to thank him for his service," Soderman said Tuesday. "The board is a particularly difficult situation because you're making decisions that impact people's children, and they take that very seriously, as they should."

Keegan volunteered on a number of panels, including the Program Assessment Committee, the District Accountability Committee and several site accountability committees.

As a result of his resignation, the district is accepting letters from individuals interested in the seat.

Applicants must live in District 5 -- the foothills area south of Mottsville Lane, Sheridan Acres, Chambers Field and the Ranchos area south of Kimmerling Road -- and be a qualified voter.

A tentative appointment is planned at a special board meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Douglas High School library.

The appointee will serve the remainder of Keegan's termuntil January 2004.

Individuals should submit a letter of interest to the board of trustees or superintendent's office at P.O. Box 1888, Minden, NV 89423 by 5 p.m. Jan. 10.
