Nick Shine and Eric Aguilera impressively won titles to lead the Carson High wrestling team to a third place finish at the Vietnam Veterans Tournament in Winnemucca.
Fallon, one of the favorites in Northern Nevada, won the tournament while Valley View of California placed second. Ten of 14 Carson wrestlers placed in the event.
The Senators were in fifth place after the first day on Friday. But eight Carson wrestlers made the semifinals as the Senators moved up to finish third on Saturday.
"We had great competition," Carson coach Dean Schmanski said. "Fallon did look strong. It was a great tournament for us."
The 190-pound Shine, despite going up against bigger wrestlers, pinned all of his opponents in the first or second period at 215 pounds. Aguilera won 8-3 in the finals at 112 pounds.
Others to place for Carson were: Paul Carter, 140, second; Joe Roman, 152, third; Allen Wooldridge, 189, third; Jason Klug, heavyweight, fourth; Micah Whitcome, 145, fifth; Chris Ceccarelli, 160, fifth; Mark Graham, 103, sixth; and Chris White, 135, sixth.
Schmanski said he was impressed with Graham, a freshman. "I was very proud of him," Schmanski said.
Also impressive in tough weight classes were Roman and Ceccarelli, Schmanski said. Schmanski also said he was pleased with Jeremy Steele, who came within one win of placing at 171 pounds.
