Carson girls struggle to beat Pyramid Lake

It wasn't pretty, but the Carson High girls basketball team set up a much anticipated rematch in the semifinals of the McQueen Tournament.

The Senators struggled to a 51-37 win over 1A Pyramid Lake on Saturday. The win set up a showdown with Fallon in a battle of two of the Northern 4A's top teams at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Carson will have a chance for revenge as it couldn't hold onto a 10-point fourth quarter lead as Fallon came back for the win at home earlier in the season.

Carson (12-3) had beaten 1A power Pyramid Lake by more than 30 points earlier in the year. But the Senators trailed 14-9 against Pyramid Lake after one quarter on Saturday.

The Senators came back to take a 23-22 halftime lead, led 38-31 after three quarters and outscored Pyramid Lake 13-6 in the fourth period.

"I didn't have a good feeling," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "I felt we could beat them, but I felt it would be something like this. We just didn't play with a lot of emotion."

Talia Joyce hit four three-pointers in scoring 17 points for Carson. "She shot the ball well," Croghan said.

Terri Niederer score all 10 of her points in the second half, Terah Laack scored eight points and Ciarra Christian and Nicole Scott each had six points for the Senators.

"No doubt in my mind, we'll play with a little more emotion and pick it up a little bit," said Croghan about Monday.

CHS FRESHMEN 49, WHITTELL JVS 28

The Carson High freshmen girls basketball team took third place in the Manogue Christmas Tournament with its win over Whittell's junior varsity. Erica Walent, Sam Valerius and Sophie Raphael all made the all-tournament team for Carson.
