Holiday prompts closures, changes in office hours

With New Year's Day in the middle of the work week this year, few businesses and government offices are closing their doors for more than a day.

-- The Nevada State Library and Archives and the Carson City Library will be open every day but Wednesday, New Year's Day. The Carson City Library is closing at 6 tonight until Thursday. The Nevada State Library and Archives will maintain normal hours today, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

-- City Hall will be closed New Year's Day.

-- The Carson City Marriage Bureau will be open New Year's Day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The bureau will be open today until 6 p.m., and a judge will be available for marriages from 5 to 6 p.m.

-- The Nevada Appeal's office will be closed New Year's Day. The newspaper will publish every day. Newsroom (881-1215) and subscriber services (882-2515) employees will work.

-- Some banks may close early today. By federal mandate, banks close on New Year's Day.

-- The Carson City Senior Center and senior centers in Dayton, Douglas County, Silver Springs and Virginia City will be closed Wednesday.

-- Carson Aquatic Facility will be open with lap swims, open swims and the weight rooms every day, except New Year's Day. Sweat Shop, which is in the Community Center, will be restricted to 9 a.m. classes, except Thursday. Call 887-2290.

-- The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except Wednesday. Children should bring a sack lunch, officials said.

-- Offices at Western Nevada Community College will be open normal hours weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the semester break. Classes are over for the year. College offices will be closed New Year's Day. Spring semester starts Jan. 21.

-- Carson City schools are in winter break. Classes resume Monday.
