Schools, city may share fields

Having fun in Carson City may become a bit easier after Tuesday's school board meeting.

A vote allowing city and Western Nevada Community College teams to share fields and facilities with the school district is expected.

"This memorandum of understanding says that the school district, in conjunction with WNCC and the city, will work toward a common goal of jointly using all recreational facilities," said Mike Mitchell, the school district's director of operation. "It benefits the community to the greatest extent when all entities have access to all facilities."

The school board's vote is the final approval needed to set the agreement into motion. The Carson City Parks and Recreation Board as well as the college's Board of Regents approved the memorandum in August.

"We think the three entities have a lot to offer each other," said Steve Kastens, director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department. "We're looking forward to the school district, hopefully, approving it."

Mitchell said the memorandum was not passed earlier because wording in the district's policy prohibited such an agreement.

The board will decide whether to change the policy and adopt the memorandum.

It was also difficult, Mitchell said, to find a consensus among the principals of the different schools.

"That's not an easy task when you're dealing with nine different supervisors," he said. "There's a lot of personalities to deal with and a lot of competing needs."

The agreement will allow city recreation organizations to use the school district's fields and brings the college one step closer to the idea of creating an intramural sports program.
