Reed 71, Galena 57

RENO -- Reed's Erin Jackson and Marialea Moore were too much for the shorthanded Grizzlies, who only had eight players in uniform.

Jackson, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored eight of her 23 points in the third quarter and Moore, a lightning quick freshman point guard, scored eight of her 14 points in the second half to help the Raiders (2-1) take control of the game.

Galena (1-2, 9-8) was without seven varsity regulars who are serving a two-week suspension for violating team rules during a holiday tournament trip to Las Vegas. The players will be eligible to play again next week, according to coach Karen Friel.

"I was OK with the way we played tonight with these young kids," said Friel, who brought up four J.V. players to play. "And Reed is a good team. They have a real good chance to win our division. They're very talented and they have a lot of different people who can hurt you."

Joanna Hixon scored 23 points, nine in the fourth quarter to lead Galena offensively. Seslee Howell also scored 16 points for the Grizzlies.

Another bright spot was sophomore point guard Mandy Dickman, according to Friel.

"She didn't score, but she came in and gave us a spark at both ends of the court," Friel said. "She got the ball up the floor and got the ball to the right people."
